Kristin's Blog: Intact Dog Permit in effect for San Antonio, Texas

Intact Dog Permit in effect for San Antonio, Texas

So, what is it?

All dogs over the age of 6 months old MUST be spayed or neutered OR get them a permit @ the cost of $50 to keep them "Intact".

What's the point?

In an attempt to spare animals from euthanization due to overpopulation in San Antonio, the intact dog permit is an incentive for pet sterilization as a means of controlling the overpopulation.

When did this happen?

Approved in December 2007 and implemented today, 1/1/09 it was delayed to allow for an increase in the spay/neuter resources within our community.

What happens if I don't comply?

You can be fined, issued a citation or get mandatory court appearances.  True this will be hard to police, but it will make people more aware of the problem of overpopulation.

Where can I get more info?

Residents can call Animal Care Services at 207-4PET or log onto www.saacs.net for more information on upcoming clinics.

I am not opposed it.  Euthanization is a terrible thing. I am sure policeing it will be the hard part.  But at least it could save alot of dogs from abuse or starvation or worse.
