Saving for a new home in today's market~

Saving for a new home can be stressful and less of a reality than one would like to make it.  It is very doable.  Start small with a savings account for that new home.  Pay yourself first with every paycheck putting more and more away until you make homeownership a reality.  The pros far outweigh the cons:

Why it's difficult to save -

  • New additions to your family
  • Automobiles need repair or replacement
  • Furniture wears out
  • Major appliances need repair or replacement
  • Medical expenses occur
  • Rent increases are inevitable

HOWEVER-

Homeownership creates an automatic savings program for you & your family!

  • Tax deductions for interest
  • Tax deductios property tax
  • Appreciation benefits
  • Loan balance reduction
  • $7500 first time homebuyer Tax credit

Kristin - Very wise words. Paying yourself first is always hard to do for there seems to be something else that needs to get paid. But you are so right, that is the best way to start saving, even if it is only a couple of dollars a week, the money can really add up.

Hi Kristin -- Very good advice for everyone, especially people wanting to buy their first home.

Hi Sandra! - The first time I heard this I was very young & didn't believe I could afford to save a buck or two.  When I actually started it (years later) I was amazed at how I didn't even REALIZE the money was gone.  Secretly tucked away in a safe place for future use.  So, whatever it takes.  If you have to sneak it from yourself, do it.  You will thank you later for it.  :).  KM

SP - I hope you are feeling better after your medical stuff this week.
