Things change all the time. You buy the newest in technology as far as phones go, the VERY next day there's a newer version. You schedule a closing @ the title company, next day, they aren't open. The Real Estate market is great, next, your looking for a job @ Wal-Mart.
Things change but they stay the same. When we realize that yes, times change but if we wait it out long enough, things eventually come back around to the way they were. The same, but different. Real Estate is no different.
One thing that stays the same is Father's day comes in June. In honor of my father, who was a Real Estate agent BACK IN THE DAY I have put together a few videos to play on Sunday's during the month of June.
Get to know my dad, learn something about old school Real Estate - Then VS. Now & THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS FOR TECHNOLOGY FOLKS!

$150 on his first transaction?? What made him stay in the business? Yikes!
But I can't believe there were no classes to take. How did you know what questions would be on the "test"?
HI Donna! - EXACTLY my thoughts. Especially with 3 kids to feed! Things got better for him obviously! I'll have to ask him that for next week!
My little viedo thingy isn't working. Wow I love hearing about RE in the 1900s from my grandfather, who once wrote a contract on a paper napkin. I will check back and what a way to honor your dad.
Kristin, I LOVE this post and it is so cool having your Dad relate a history of real estate as well as a personal history that you wuill cherish. I just purchased a video camera myself and plan on jumping in to the fray soon! Great post!!
No MLS, No Lock boxes still exists with some office and agents in my market... thankfully most here are Realtors and do use lock-boxes, even some use electronic boxes now.. but that is how it is in a small rural market.
Krisin, Gee! I remember those days! I remember Listing Books and amortization charts and all kinds of cool stuff. And yeah, no lockboxes except maybe an occassional combo - always with the same entry code -SPI! None of us knew how to change them. Oh! And stopping at phone booths to check email!
Kristin,
Great idea to interview your father and a terrific post. It sounds like the industry has come a long way.
KM
Kristin, things have really changed since 1969. $150 doesn't sound like a lot of money today, but back then it probably wasn't bad. Looking forward to the next interview. Thanks.
Thanks Charles. A paper napkin!!?? WOWIE ZOWIE. Now that's something spectacular!
Russell - I can't wait to see your videos!! Always nice to see a bit of what other folks in other areas see. I love it!@!
Excellent post and what a great way to recognize your dad for his hard work. .just in time for fathers day
Mary - Wow. That makes things tough!
Pat - Stopping @ a phone booth to check email? I don't get it.
KM - Thanks. It was fun making the videos also. The editing is the LOOOOOONNNNNGGGG part. Still working on that piece.
Michael - That's exactly what I was thinking. Not a ton o' cash for these days!
Fernando - Thank you!
Kristin- One a Broker always a Broker :) How wonderful that you and your sister own a company and your father can guide you with his wealth of experience. It has changed a lot, and many people I know still do most things the "old" way...it's what they're comfortable with...the real "sellers" as your father said. That was then and this is now.....love it :)
SMS - I know. I had to edit him & put all the stories (well, probably not ALL) of them into 4 vids. He enjoyed the interview I think, he did a good job.
SP - thanks for that transalation of the $. That's not a bad first commission but it's more like working a rental than selling a home!
Debby! - You made it to my blog! Nice to see you here! Thanks. I enjoyed interviewing him, he's got tons of stories!
Kathy - He has a lot of stories of how it used to be. We like hearing them. :D
Sounds like the prices have really changed a lot since back in the day. Very cool to hear your Dad talking about the industry years ago.
JL - Thanks. I love hearing his stories also. My, my things have changed & i'm so glad they have!
Hi Mom!- Glad you liked it. Wow, that 1,000 smack a roos took you far back then, eh?
Kristen Ceil's dad was a realtor back then and his stories are much the same. He must have sold a bunch of Ray Ellison homes, don't remember the other builder's he spoke about. Many homes were two and three bedrooms, one bath and a carport and cost about $8,000 - $12,000. If you sold a home with two bathrooms and a garage that was expensive. He sold allot on the southside of San Antonio. Looking forward to your next video, good job.
Carl & Ceil - My dad sold a ton of Ray Ellison homes also! Usually over there off Marbach & 410. Dang, if they had homes for 8K now i'd grab a couple of them!! :D
Kristin, This was really neat! I enjoyed hearing your dad's stories and will look forward to next week!
Have a great day,
Anne Rains
Thanks for sharing! This video will be great for future watching. Even your Dad will forget some of the details over time.
Anne - THanks! I'm getting it ready! The interviewing is EASY, the editing, no so much. :D
Tom!- You found my blog! I am sure my dad will forget the details someday...seems @ times he has, I had to remind him about going to the office & getting the keys, etc. I have tried to read your blog but it is WAY over my head. Foreign words & acronyms. :S. Thanks for stopping by!
