Swine Flu & other mass hysteria in San Antonio, Texas

This week marked mass hysteria in San Antonio & surrounding cities for the Swine Flu.  Schools have been closed until May 11th.  Children were ecstatic, parents, not so much.  The school cancellation was announced the night prior at around 9PM leaving parents scrambling for child care & entertainment for bored children.

swine flu ~ San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio had five reported probable cases as of yesterday & more are expected.  Proms, athletic award banquets & fundraisers have all been postponed.  Giving "peace" at church has been banned as well as wine, we can't have everyone drinking from the same glass.

While the swine flu is very serious I am curious how working parents are handling child care.  Hopefully, we don't have a parent somewhere watching everyones children at their home so other parents can still make it to work.  This truly defeats the purpose of avoiding gatherings.

So, what am I doing this weekend?  Staying out of church, out of schools, out of large gatherings & perhpas even small ones.

If I happen to make it anywhere & someone coughs I am running straight for the door.

Hi Kristin, This morning I really wanted to go out for breakfast but ended up making breakfast at home.  I am staying home as much as possible.

I am sure as close as you are to Mexico people have to be more concerned than we do here.  We have one case in our state that has been confirmed, up in the northern part of the state.

I wonder if you are right about parents with kids.

I am interested to see here how it affects church this weekend.  I'm going.  I skipped a meeting yesterday because I am sneezing.

We have three people in our county "suspected" of having and being tested for the flu.  I shudder to think of schools closing as we have already used all our snow and emergency days.  Regents and finals are coming up  . . .

Obviously, as a society, we have to do what is best for the health and safety of the public.  I cautioned my teenager to watch for people coughing and sneezing and to wash his hands frequently.  It probably went in one ear and out the other.  :-/

Kristin - I hope you and your family stay healthy...I think we've only had 1 confirmed case in Missouri.  :)

WOW!!! Kristin, they're cancelling school for another week!!!!   I ran errands yesterday afternoon and the stores were pretty empty -- don't know if it's the economy or the swine flu or a combination.  Heard a lady coughing in one store and decided it was time to go back home.

OMG, Must not be too many appointments to show homes until the threat passes.

I know of one event that was cancelled this weekend after a couple of cases were suspected in Huntsville.  I really don't see or hear much fuss about it in our area.
