Why buying a home is like finding a man on eHarmony!

Online dating is a whole new arena some are hesitant of trying but hey, it works, you've seen the commercials.  Throw up a picture, put some witty words next to your mug & your true love will come a callin'.  Hopefully.

I have PERSONAL experience and much love for eHarmony.  My boyfriend, Trevor and I met on this site in 2007 & have 21 of the 29 areas of compatability that Dr. Warren brags about.  Those aren't bad odds, i've decided to keep him.

I was thinking the other day how the home buying process is much like finding your new main squeeze online.  Obviously, I qualify to compare the two & here I go....

On eHarmony, in order to find true love online you must first answer a million questions about yourself, your likes, your dislikes, your beliefs, your occupation, your ideal mate, etc. etc. etc. etc.  It goes on forever.  In the home buying process, when you apply for a loan, you give the loan officer very personal information, credit history, social security number, income amounts, etc.  Both are very invasive.

Once you answer all the questions eHarmony sends you matches, you take a look at them & decide if you want to go further with that match.  Do they look good to you?  Does their profile catch your eye?  Do they seem sincere?  If all answers are yes you proceed to the next step.  In the home buying process, you tell your Realtor what you want in a home, they send you homes that meet your specifications, one story, @ least 3 bedrooms, no converted garages, etc.

On eHarmony if you decide to go onto the next step you talk on the phone with your new potential boyfriend or even meet in person.  This is, as they say, where the "Proof is in the pudding" because NOW you see for yourself if they are who they say they are...Do they look at all like their profile picture or was that picture taken 10 years ago?  Are they really as funny as their profile brags about yet when you meet them they are a real dud and having a conversation is like pulling teeth?  Ahhhh, and then there are the omissions, LIKE they are still married or have 14 kids from 3 different baby mommas, they just filed for bankruptcy and are supporting their last girlfriend.

I liken this meeting experience to when you pick out a home to view in person.  Online you love it, are already mentally placing your furniture in each room & planning to host Thanksgiving there.  You wait with eager anticipation as your Realtor makes plans to show it to you - you drive up & notice that the "great view" that's described online is really the neighbors backyard or the "has potential" mentioned in MLS really should read "it's a dump".  They also forgot to mention that it backs up to the train tracks & the noise is unbearable and the last homeowners were killed inside the home therefore giving it a ton of baggage & bad karma.  The list goes on.  Get my drift?

Much like seeing homes in person, when meeting your eHarmony matches in person you see what works & what doesn't, you pick out things that are show-stoppers with each man & home until you find one that suits you.

In both processes you go through a few to find the one that was made just for you, until you find your Trevor.  You'll know your home when you see it, just like finding a man.

So there you have it, finding a man & finding a home to love.  A ton of similarities, no real differences.  Your home will not love you back emotionally but you will see the home's love in the equity it builds up for you over time.
